Schedule 40 vs. Schedule 80
When dealing with PVC Landscape supplies it is very important to understand some of the language that is used. Two of the most common terms when referencing Landscaping supplies are "PVC Schedule 40” and "PVC Schedule 80”. These two terms each refer to the "wall thickness” of the PVC item (Pipe or fitting) in question. Schedule 40 PVC Pipes will have the same outside diameter as Schedule 80 PVC Pipes and a different inside diameter. It is the opposite with PVC Fittings - The inner diameter is the same while the outer diameter will be different.
Because of the difference in sizes, Schedule 40 PVC Pipes and Fittings will have different applications then Schedule 80 PVC Pipes and Fittings. Because Schedule 80 Pipes and Fittings are thicker, they are better applied to jobs that require higher in-pipe pressure or higher water temperature. The thickness of the PVC wall becomes more important when dealing with larger pipes. 2” Schedule 80 Pipes will be rated up to 400 PSI compared to a rating of 280 PSI for 2” Schedule 40 pipe. Smaller pipe diameters will result in a stronger pipe, and thus will withstand higher water pressure.
Examples of practical applications for PVC Schedule 80 over PVC Schedule 40 would be Ball Valves. Ball valves are used at high pressure locations in irrigation systems making them a more viable candidate for the high pressure capabilities of Schedule 80 PVC.
Because of Schedule 80 PVC's hardier qualities, it is less often used in the Irrigation Supply and Landscape business (about 5% of the time) and more often used in industrial businesses. To top that off, PVC Schedule 80 is quite a bit more expensive than Schedule 40 PVC. When cost is an issue (as it usually is), Schedule 40 PVC is your friend.
